Where's the next generation of neon-creative geniuses? Look no further than Alfred University. As long as we're playing with electronically supercharged gases in western New York state, here's a look at some creations I photographed last year at AU's campus.
Dashing off to shoot the breeze in New York City, I nearly forgot about Brent Gillette, owner of Bristol Signs and Neon. He makes neon signs way back in the woods of Ontario County, about eight hours northwest of the lights of Broadway.
It's doubtful that many of Brent's creations show up in Times Square. But there's an obvious mastery of the art that fills his warm studio near Naples, NY. He demonstrated his technique during an artists' weekend of open houses.
I don't frequent many saloons these days, but it's appealing to see his attention to detail doesn't go to the mass production of Budweiser signs. You can read more about his technique here.
